New HIPAA Privacy & Security Regs for Physicians
Just when you thought professional regs couldn't get more complicated, more compliance requirements have appeared on the horizon. HIPAA privacy and security rules are now updated and revised. And by the federal government's own admission, the new rules are the most comprehensive set of changes in HIPAA since they were originally adopted.
All covered entities, including physicians who transmit or store potential health information, must be in compliance with these news rules by Sept. 23, 2013. In broad brush strokes, the changes address:
- Notice of privacy practices requirements.
- Disclosure of protected health information (PHI).
- Mandated policies and procedures.
- Business associate agreements.
- Enforcement and penalties.
UMA surveyed members to assess the need for assistance in complying with these new regulations. As a result, UMA has compiled a few local resources that are available to assist:

Video of UMA Special Meeting on Physician Choice & Competition Now Online
UMA held a special meeting with members to discuss the ramifications of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on Physician Choice and Market Competition in Healthcare. The meeting was held on April 25th at the SouthTowne Expo Center in Salt Lake City and featured Jeff Goldsmith, MD, and Mark Levin, MD, as special guest speakers. Full Dues Discount for Choosing Auto Renew
UMA Full Members who do not qualify for any other discount are eligible to save 7.5 percent off their annual UMA dues if they will sign up for Automatic Dues Renewal via an automatic withdrawal from either a checking or savings account. The withdrawal can be set up to occur in either December or January of each year. Those who already qualify for discounted dues can also sign up for auto renewal, but no additional discount is available.
