Important Message to all Utah Medicaid Providers about NPI

UMA received the following message from Medicaid on March 18, 2008:

Effective April 14, 2008, Medicaid will reject all claims submitted without the National Provider Identifier (NPI). At this time, claims with certain NPI errors are being paid through our internal system of cross walking. After April 14, 2008, your claims will no longer be paid through this cross walking system.

As part of our ongoing effort to educate our valued Providers, we are making this notice available. For detailed information on proper billing procedures, have your billing staff visit the Medicaid website at http://health.utah.gov/medicaid. From the main page, they will find a section specifically for the NPI with useful links and training resources. Medicaid is encouraging Providers to begin immediately submitting claims with NPI’s only. This will allow you time to correct any problems that may arise.

Failure to employ this recommendation may result in an interruption in payment of your claims after the April 14, 2008, deadline.

If you have additional question regarding this issue, please call the Utah Medicaid Provider hotline at 1-800-662-9651 (in SLC, call 538-6155).
