Committee and Task Force Descriptions

Ready to get involved and learn about advocacy? If you are interested in serving or participating on a UMA Committee or Task Force, please complete the Volunteer Form and specify the committee(s) which you are interested in serving. Thank you for your interest in leadership, advocacy and supporting medicine through your membership in UMA.

ADVOCACY-LEGISLATIVE

Legislative Committee - Reviews all legislation to recommend a position to the UMA Board, making the final decision. Typically meets once in November and then every two weeks from January to mid-March during the Utah Legislative Session on Tuesdays at 6:00 pm and as long as needed for discussion of proposed bills.

Utah Medical Political Action (UMPAC) Board - Silver level or higher contributors may serve on the Committee to approve contributions to candidates and set fundraising goals and events. Typically meets quarterly.

ADVOCACY-THIRD PARTIES

Third Party Relations Committee - Addresses concerns regarding commercial payers’ policies that impact physicians’ ability to treat patients and provides information on best practices in dealing with commercial payers. Meets as needed.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS-PUBLIC HEALTH

Healthy Lifestyles Committee - Reviews promoting healthy lifestyles, including weight, nutrition, physical activity and ways to physicians may be more involved with their patients on these issues. Typically meets quarterly.

EDUCATION AND MEMBERSHIP

CME Accreditation Committee - Administers the accreditation program for Utah and interstate providers of continuing medical education and promulgates new accreditation criteria, standards, and policies developed by the ACCME. Committee members are assigned to survey accreditation documentation prior to the meetings and submit findings to the committee. Training is available. The committee meets remotely, as needed, three times a year.

UMA Foundation CME Committee - Conducts peer reviews of CME activities to ensure ACCME criteria and standards are in compliance. The committee members participate in the peer-review process as needed.

Controlled Substance Task Force - Reviews Utah’s controlled substance misuse, abuse, and overdose problem and recommends solutions to the UMA Board. Develops educational modules to satisfy state prescriber education requirements. Meets as needed.

Editorial Board - Determines issues the Utah Physician™ magazine will focus on for the year. The Board also either gathers stories or articles or writes articles. The Board collaborates remotely.

QUALITY

Bylaws Committee - Reviews the UMA Bylaws and brings recommendations to the HOD for approval as needed.

Ethics Committee - Reviews specific ethical issues that arise or examines medical ethics in general. Makes recommendations to the UMA Board. Meets as needed.

LEADERSHIP

County Medical Societies - Each County Medical Society elects a Trustee to serve on the UMA Board of Trustees. Societies also elect officers. For information on current counties...Learn More.

Sections - Leadership positions are available:
  • Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI)
  • Medical Students
  • Residents/Fellows
  • Women Physicians
  • Young Physicians (YPS) for under 40 or first 8 years of practice

House of Delegates - Delegates are selected from their county societies, chartered specialty societies, chartered large independent practice groups, small independent groups, employed physicians, resident and medical students, to represent colleagues at the annual policy-making meeting held in September.

Council of Trustees - Considers issues important to membership and makes recommendations on those issues to the Board of Directors. The members of this committee are designated following the Bylaws. Typically meets quarterly or as needed.

Utah Medical Association - UMA has several state-wide positions to fill. The UMA President also appoints committee and task force chair positions.

UMA Foundation - Members are formally appointed for six-year terms, a maximum of two cycles. Membership is limited to the requirements in the Foundation Bylaws, and nominees must be approved by the Board. Reviews grant requests for worthy charitable organizations that meet the organization requirements in the Bylaws. Foundation annual giving is approximately $200,000 from interest or earnings. Typically meets twice a year.
